Forensic Expert Consultation Services
For Pex Forensic Consulting, review of reports and consultation with attorneys and investigators represents approximately 90% of our work. Most cases begin with a discovery packet that would contain, crime scene reports, investigator’s reports, lab reports, autopsy reports and any available photographs. We always request the laboratory notes also. These notes often contain information that was not placed in a final report. Any in-lab photographs must be discovered as a Laser copy or other high quality image. We do not accept Xerox quality photo images. We receive documents as .PDF files, Microsoft Word, or hard copies. We prefer photographs on disc, but also accept generic prints. After review, salient information is entered into Casemap Software. Time Map Software may also be used to establish time lines if relevant to the issues. Contact is made with the attorney or a member of his team. This may be by e-mail, telephone or in person.
As a result of discussions, it may be necessary for us to conduct our own interview of the client. It is not uncommon for us to solicit information pertinent to the case that has not been previously known. We are more interested in the physical evidence perspective, such as where a person was standing when a shot was fired and how this relates to the autopsy report of the bullet trajectory through the body.
In criminal defense work, we often see a CSI effect. The client is hesitant to take a plea bargain because he is uncertain about the advice of his attorney. However, he watches enough television that he will believe us. This is not a slam on good attorneys and investigators; it is just cause and effect of the modern media.
Pretrial preparation can consist of a number of services. We use powerpoint in combination with our own forensic illustrators to assist in expert testimony. On a number of occasions, we have sat close to counsel or at the table with counsel to prepare questions for other experts. Experts associated with Pex Forensic Consulting have testified in hundreds of cases. This includes both Criminal and Civil casework. Our emphasis is on death investigations. This includes suicide, homicide and police officer involved shootings. We do work other types of cases on occasion.
Pex Forensic Consulting does not do DNA, Toxicology or Drug Testing. We work closely with other forensic laboratories that do provide these services.
